What Actually Happens During A Qualitative Mask Fit Test?

When you send employees for qualitative mask or respirator fit testing, they are not simply putting on equipment and receiving a certificate.

A proper session includes preparation, sensitivity screening, instruction, a structured fit-test protocol and documentation of the exact mask or respirator tested.

Understanding that process helps employers send workers prepared and understand what the final result actually means.

Before Testing Begins

The employee should arrive having completed the required preparation.

That includes following the employer’s process around the ability to wear the required mask or respirator safely, completing required paperwork, meeting facial-hair requirements and bringing the correct mask, respirator or other equipment when directed.

The fit tester confirms the mask or respirator being assessed, including the manufacturer, model, style and size.

That detail matters because the result applies to that specific mask or respirator.

First Comes Sensitivity Screening

Qualitative testing depends on the participant being able to detect the test agent.

A sensitivity screening is therefore performed before the mask or respirator fit test itself.

The purpose is simple: confirm that the employee can detect the substance being used.

If the participant cannot detect it during screening, the tester cannot rely on that agent to produce a valid sensory pass or fail result.

Then Comes Mask or Respirator Instruction

The employee is shown how to put on the mask or respirator correctly, position the straps, adjust applicable components and perform the appropriate user seal check.

This is one reason MaskFit+ treats education as part of the testing session.

A pass is useful only if the employee can reproduce the correct use of that mask or respirator later at work.

What Happens During the Test?

During qualitative testing, the employee wears the mask or respirator while an approved test agent is introduced.

The employee completes a prescribed series of exercises that include:

  • normal breathing
  • deep breathing
  • turning the head
  • moving the head up and down
  • speaking
  • bending, and
  • normal breathing again

These exercises help assess whether the mask or respirator maintains its seal while the employee moves in ways that approximate normal use.

What Happens If the Employee Detects the Test Agent?

The test stops.

That is not wasted time. It is information.

The fit needs to be reassessed before the employee can receive a passing result on that mask or respirator.

Depending on the situation, the mask or respirator may need to be repositioned, inspected or replaced with another appropriate model or size before testing continues.

What Does a Pass Actually Tell the Employer?

A passing result confirms an acceptable fit for that employee and the exact mask or respirator tested under the applicable qualitative procedure.

It does not mean every N95 will fit that employee.

It does not determine whether the mask or respirator was correctly selected for the workplace hazard.

It does not replace maintenance, inspection, training or the rest of the employer’s respiratory protection program.

The most useful fit test gives your organization two things:

A documented result and an employee who understands what that result means.

That teaching-first approach reflects where MaskFit+ comes from. We are a family-owned and operated business with a long family history in health and safety education, so the goal is not simply to issue a certificate and move on.

That is the standard MaskFit+ brings to workplace sessions.
