When Does a Mask Fit Test Need to Be Repeated?

A mask or respirator fit test must be repeated at the interval required by the worker’s applicable respiratory protection program and sooner when the wearer, mask or respirator, or workplace conditions change.

Retest When the PPE Changes

A fit test applies to the specific mask or respirator manufacturer, model, style and size used during the assessment.

If your organization changes any of those elements, the previous result does not automatically transfer to the new product. Even two N95 masks from the same manufacturer can have different shapes, dimensions, strap designs and sealing characteristics.

For example, an employee who passed on a 3M Aura 1870+ should not automatically be issued a 3M 1860 simply because both are N95s.

The replacement mask needs to be assessed on that worker.

This matters when employers:

• change suppliers
• substitute products during a shortage
• move to another mask or respirator model
• change available sizes, or
• replace a discontinued product

Purchasing decisions and fit-testing records therefore need to communicate with each other.

Do Not Wait for the Renewal Date

Review the employee’s fit before the scheduled renewal when:

• the manufacturer, model, style or size changes
• the tested mask or respirator becomes unavailable
• the employee’s facial dimensions change
• the employee can no longer obtain the expected seal
• other protective equipment begins interfering with the fit, or
• the employee’s role, hazard or respiratory protection requirements change

A current record is only useful when it still reflects the equipment being worn.

Connect Fit-testing Records to Inventory

Employers can reduce mistakes by tracking fit testing alongside mask and respirator inventory.

Your records should identify the exact mask or respirator each employee passed on so supervisors know what to issue and purchasing teams know which products need to remain available.

If one model is discontinued, the organization can quickly identify which workers are affected and arrange testing on an alternative.

Build Renewal into the Program

Do not wait until a large group of records expires at once.

A simple register can track employees, mask or respirator models, test dates and anticipated renewal dates while allowing enough time for absences, scheduling challenges or unsuccessful fits.
