Why a Fit Test Record Needs More Than a Pass

A fit-test record should tell your organization more than whether an employee passed.

It should connect that employee to the exact high-quality mask or respirator that demonstrated an acceptable fit so supervisors, health and safety teams and purchasing staff know what equipment should be issued.

What Should a Fit-test Record Identify?

Useful documentation should include information such as:

  • the employee tested
  • the test date
  • the fit tester
  • the mask or respirator manufacturer, model, style and size
  • whether testing was qualitative or quantitative
  • test agent used for qualitative testing, such as saccharin or Bitrex
  • the applicable result or criteria, and
  • relevant personal protective equipment worn during the assessment when it could affect fit

The specific documentation required may depend on the workplace, respiratory protection program and applicable requirements.

Passed on one N95 is Not Enough

For example, a pass on one N95 does not confirm that another N95 will fit the same employee.

Different products can have different shapes, straps, dimensions and sealing characteristics even when they carry the same filtration classification.

That makes the exact mask or respirator identification one of the most operationally useful pieces of information on the record.

Good Records Support Purchasing

Fit-testing documentation is not only a health and safety record, it can also become useful purchasing information.

As a family-owned and operated business focused solely on fit testing, MaskFit+ treats clear documentation as part of the service, not simply paperwork to rush through at the end.

If multiple employees have passed on a particular mask or respirator model, your purchasing team needs to know that replacing it with another product may affect those workers.

If the existing model becomes unavailable, the organization can use its records to identify who needs to be reassessed for an alternative.

That is considerably easier than discovering the problem after substitute masks or respirators have already been distributed.

A Pass Should Lead to Action

Fit-test documentation is most valuable when it helps the organization make decisions after the instructor leaves.

It should help answer questions such as:

  • Which mask or respirator should this employee be issued?
  • When were they tested?
  • Has the product changed?
  • Does this person need reassessment?
  • Do we still stock the model shown on the record?

A useful record helps your organization apply that result correctly.
